bad luck

November 3, 2004

well, it’s been a frustrating week so far. some things that have happened….

unfortunately, my cousin didn’t win his race last night (he was running for a county commissioner spot). i’m soooo glad the elections are over now - political ads/robocalls have been driving me insane for months.

speaking of races (and all my doctor bashing recently), i have to post about my neighbor - my luck apparently has rubbed off on her (sorry shaylee!). she runs cross country and has been the top runner at the high school here pretty much all year. at the conference meet two weeks ago, she couldn’t breathe very well - it sounds like exercise-induced asthma, at least to me. so anyway, she went to her doctor and he decided she had allergies by looking up her nose…? he never did an allergy test or anything, and gave her an inhaler and some medication. so she ran at regional this past weekend (which ended up being in 50-70 mph wind gusts) and couldn’t breathe again. hey doc, want to rethink your “diagnosis” and actually run tests this time?

i’ve also gotten to (again) deal with the fun task of a dead hard drive. my parents’ pc choked sunday night (wouldn’t boot, same as what happened with my laptop HD a few years ago) and somehow, against my will, i’ve been elected the one to get the PC up and running again. wouldn’t be so bad if someone had backed their important files up… (we’re hoping a data-recovery person that nik suggested will be able to salvage the files). needless to say, i’ve been on this massive data backup kick now.

and i can’t forget to mention the griffins game last friday night!

my mom and i intentionally got the best available seats for a specific section - we ended up basically next to the griffins’ locker room walkway (which is at the back-left side of the bench) and 3 rows from the ice. it wasn’t too busy since high school football playoffs started that night, so parents must have told their kids they could sit where they wanted. well at the beginning and end of each period, these kids decided they needed to be next to the walkway to the locker room to high-five the players when they were coming/going from the locker room. which meant 6 occasions per obnoxious child of getting crawled over, getting my purse kicked/stepped on (which was not bothering ANYTHING where i set it on the floor), or even at one point, i had a probably 2nd grader half sitting on my leg (it took every ounce of restraint that i don’t have not to shove her off). makes the 2 motormouth boys behind us and the other similar “events” as a result of kids running around seem insignificant!

talk about a way to try to enjoy a hockey game. it just reminded me even more why i hate kids and will never have any of my own.

the new lenses for my glasses still aren’t here. it’s been a week and a half and i’m usually patient, but it took 2 weeks last time and that was when the lab was knowingly backed up. grr.

anyway. now that that’s outta my system… lol

that brings me to two questions for you guys to answer:

1) IF YOU DON’T LIVE IN MI - have you ever heard of vernors? (there’s a reason for me asking this, really)

2) what’s a cool place to go for new year’s? i have a few days to burn between a floating holiday, a holiday day and one more vacation day at the end of december… so i could go somewhere for 5 days or so. just looking for suggestions, i guess. (but heck, with my horrid luck this year, i’ll get stuck here or something… lol)

  4. 1) Yes I have never lived in MI and I have heard of Vernors. It is a yucky tasting gingerale type soft-drink. When I was about 13 I was staying in a hotel in Vail Colorado and Vernors was the only soda left in the machine–huge mistake. I can remember that taste after all of these years.

    2) Hawaii!!!! The cannot beat the weather in Hawaii at New Years, plus if you plan your trip right, you can catch the Maui Gymnastics Invitational and/or Aloha Gymfest and see some good hihg-level gymnastics while you are there.
