pathetic

July 23, 2004

to make a long story short: my grandpa decided he wanted to convert all his vhs tapes to dvd and add commentary to them - so i figured out what he needed, he handed over his credit card and told me to order it all…

before i get too far, i didn’t mention the curveball - he has one of those “all in one” sony vaio desktop PC’s, so everything basically HAS to be external. so after a significant amount of research, i picked the capture card. no one in GR has it in stock, but bestbuy.com had them (and also would be the easiest, return-wise, if necessary). on the product page, it was noted as being backordered, but should be in stock within 5 days (this was around the 4th of july). about a week passed, and i got an email from best buy - it was still on backorder and was expected in TWENTY TWO more days now. i can be patient, but not THAT patient - so the order got cancelled.

enter buy.com, based on a pricegrabber recommendation. placed the order last thursday, and the product page said it was in stock and should ship in 1-2 days. well i didn’t hear anything for a few days (and going in the “my account” section of their site just said “order sent to warehouse”), so i was getting annoyed yet again. last night, the product page said “in stock” but the order page was worded so that it appeared to be backordered. wasn’t too happy, and my dad and i decided it’d be cancelled today and ordered by newegg (who we would have gone through in the first place, if it hadn’t been for a “same item only” exchange policy).

got an email this morning saying it shipped…? ok, cool, don’t have to cancel after all. so then i checked the ups tracking number… “out for delivery”.

how nice of them to send the tracking number 3 hours after it was put on the UPS truck to go to my grandpa’s house.

random sidenote: i may re-register at brink soon. not totally sure yet, but more likely than not.

  2. Like I said earlier, doesn’t it just suck that it’s getting harder and harder to find competent people/companies these days?!?

  3. Hey Kelley! I’m going to bug you about two things if that is cool. What is the exact process you use to transfer VHS tapes to DVD? Secondly, do you have a button I can use to link your site. I don’t know what I did with your last button. Also, Brink is pretty fun. You should join Studio Bar, too! :)

  4. kendra, it’s fairly straightforward. i have a video capture card which hooks up to a VCR and a usb port on my PC. you just get the VCR to the point where you want to start capturing (you can preview everything through a PC), then hit “record” with software. once you get the video into your computer, you can edit stuff out, add titles, etc (for example, my “test tape” had commercials, so i took them out). then you convert the finished version into one file - i used mpeg2 - and burn it to a dvd!

with my first attempt, i used the program that did the capturing and editing for the burning part too… but burning took FOREVER so i’m gonna try to come up with something a little faster. i’ve done one dvd so far (on a dvd+rw), and it plays fine in both my dvd player and my parents’.

    and for a button:
